Normal Life: A Quest For Meaning

Chapter 1

The sermon was the same again today. We are all sinners heading down a pawed pathway to hell. The words change but the feeling is the same. The sentiment is old. Leonard looked around the church and saw the patrons. People reaching for hope. People hoping for a time of release, an image of grace, a moment of peace. Some of these faces wore. Old, tired looks, some of them had youthful, hungry eyes, all of them searching for answers. Not one finding them.

The priest said his magic words, held up the wine and bread, and prayed, no, begged for a miracle. His hart sank a bit deeper as he broke the bread and there was no flesh, no blood, no savior. Leonard watched as faith continued to creep away from the grasp of his fellow participants, hope seemed useless.

Each parishioner followed the herd, with an acceptance of the lie. Each received the wafer of bread and the sip of wine, all wishing the bread was a bit more filling, and the wine a bit more quenching. Individuals yearning for fulfilment. Souls waiting for enlightenment. Not here, not today, faith has lost ground.

Leonard wrote his bicycle towards his home. Routine is evident everywhere. The Monday passing of life seen in the sheepish followings of media and marketing. Upscale coffee shops prolifiring six-dollar-a cup coffees with chemically enhanced sugars and politically correct slogans, cars passed by with ergonomic designs, pollution free engines, and prices marked out of sensibility. White picked fences with little pink houses and Jack Russell Terriers in the yard defining the words "normal life". A once cute couple argues on the front porch, while the mom holds her child an a leash. The child drowns out, the threats of divorce with the help of her i-pod, Leonard nearly ran the back of t he modern families Lexis watching the parade of ignorance.

~Leonard -"Is this all that life has to offer? Boredom fills everything in this life of objectified superiority." (Out loud, spoken as if to some heavenly host).

Leonard enters his small but quint little apartment. He instinctively grabs the remote and turns the television on. Some mindless, so-called reality show banters against the serenity of the room. Leonard moves into his economy-sized kitchen to find a can of food with a pull-top. He shows the pre-made meal into the microwave and bombs the food with radiation.

News of racial tensions and global warming squawk through the apartment. Images of hate and despair reflect of of the waxed wooden floor. Leonard sits awash with the glow of inequities vibrating in his eyes. A look of discus stayed plastered on his face.

~Leonard -"Is there a reason for all of this? What is wrong with our world?"

Leonard jumps as his cell phone vibrates and rings. He digs the phone from his pocket and notices that it is Maggie. A smile creases his lips. Sparkles fill his eyes. Leonard quickly mutes the TV and answers the call.

The establishing shot is one that provides a view of the entire space in which the action will occur. The establishing shot can be used at any time as a reestablishing shot if it is deemed necessary to re-orient the audience following a series of complex sequences.

     ~Leonard -"Hello. "

~Maggie -" Hi Lover!" ( Excitement fills her voice.)

~Leonard -"It is always great to hear you round of my day." (Relief is evident.)

~Maggie - "How was your day?"

~Leonard -"Up to this point, boring, but now, filled with sunshine. Can I see you tonight?"

~ Maggie -"Only if you have a picture... I have a date tonight..." (Silence. Long pause. A look of despair and defeat shows immediately shows on Leonard's face.)

~ Maggie -"Ha! Made you think! Pick me up in half an hour! How would you like me to dress?"

~Leonard -"As you want. You are beautiful in everything. Even in life! See you soon, love you!" (Calmed and grinning with a blush. Relief evident on his face.)

~ Maggie -"Not as much as I love you! Bye."

The two quickly shower and freshen up. The choice of clothing is hard for both. Everything looks so plain, so usual. Nothing is enough, plumage to impress the love of their life. It becomes a settle for experience, simple uniforms of life donned in respect for society, such a bore.

A quick ride across town leaves the outside scenery as a blur. Shapeless and meaningless happenings through the city streak Leonard's vision as he drive. The city has no color, no life. It has no meaning. One house stands out as he pulls up. A trimmed garden with flowers of passion fills Leonard's view. He walks up the manicured path lit by glimmering tea lights. The ornate door beckons his attention with a small glowing doorbell button. Maggie answers the door radiantly, glowing happiness through her simple costume of normalcy.

The two lovers head into the city in search of an adventure to add experience and fun to their doldrum day. Excitements in their eyes, and color in their cheeks battles against the drab imagery that the city offers. All of the city looks the same. Neon signs, billboards, people, prostitutes, no differences; all of the scenery is washed out and boring. The tow step in to a small clothing boutique, outfits from the styles that have passed more than a century ago lines the walls.

~ Maggie -"How about a change in our look?"

~ Maggie -"I want to look nice for you, I want to be your phantasy girl. When you dream, I want to be that dream. Help me dress to impress you."

The two spent more than an hour trying on clothing an finding a unique flare to make each other smile. A whole wardrobe of style awaits them. Joy decorates their faces. The shop clerk has never witnessed the happiness from people like is shown with these two. Nearly 3,000 dollars is spent between the two. Blouses, skirts, an dresses get neatly put into designer boxes. Shirts, Pants, and kerchiefs are folded and neatly arranged. Boots and shoes fille d air with the smells of English Leather as they are boxed-up. The shop clerk agreeably helps the excited couple load all of the goodies into the car. All that is except of one set of clothing to be warn by each.

Leonard and Maggie giddily slide into the changing rooms again and emerge as a glorious new couple. Leonard with his top hat, and lace-frilled shirt fits his tailed coat on and looks down at his soft sheep skin boots. Maggie steps out with her beautiful Black dress filled with the air of sensuality.

~ Leonard -"My Lady, would you like if I escorted you through this lovely city?"

There was no need for an answer. The two locked armed and headed out into the night. Smiling and giggling to each other. The outside air more vibrant and inviting because of their presence.
